Women's Lacrosse Holds On For 14-12 Win Over American

March 29, 2008

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) had three of her game-high five goals in the second half and sophomore Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made six second-half saves as the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team held on for a 14-12 win over American in non-conference action. Stony Brook is 5-3 after the win while American drops its second game in a row and is now 5-6.

After American scored the opening goal, Stony Brook answered with three of its own with two coming from Caroleo. Junior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia) scored her 13th and 14th goal of the season in the first-half to help the Seawolves to a 7-4 lead but two late goals in the half from the Eagles helped the visitors get within one, 7-6 at the half.

Stony Brook and American each scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half before Stony Brook started to pull away. Caroleo and junior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) combined for five of the Seawolves' next six goals as Stony Brook held a 14-7 lead with just over 13 minutes to go.

American would not go away as its leading scorer coming into today's game with 25 goals, Jackie Lane, scored two of the Eagles three goals to cut the deficit to just four. Brit Ferguson and Lane scored two more for American as they trailed 14-12 with under a minute to play. A save from Cahill on Anne Marie Person's shot preserved the victory for Stony Brook as it is now 2-0 against the Patriot League this season.

Caroleo (5g, 1a) and junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) (2g, 4a) totaled 12 points on the day. Freshman Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) also had two goals for the Seawolves. Cahill and freshman Jamie Carlson (Glen Cove, N.Y.) combined to make 11 saves for Stony Brook.

Along with Lane's three goals, Brittany Finnegan and Lauren Aksionoff also had three.

Stony Brook returns to conference action when it hosts UMBC on Wednesday afternoon. First draw control is scheduled for 3 pm.
