Barbuto Leads Women's Soccer Past Siena, 2-0, in Home Opener

Sept. 9, 2005

Box Score

The freshman duo of Brooke Barbuto and Trine Allenberg proved to be too much this evening, as the Stony Brook University women's soccer team defeated Siena, 2-0, under the lights at LaValle Stadium.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half, with Siena peppering Seawolves senior goalkeeper Cindy Bennett with nine shots. Bennett stopped the Saints best chance of the evening, just 5:07 into the game. Kristin Turner was shut down on a one-on-one opportunity by Bennett 10 yards out, only to have her rebound denied by Chelsea Van Horn who had covered the empty net.

Barbuto, who tallied a goal and an assist in the match, lit up the scoreboard at the 70:25 mark of the second half. She broke free from a defender and blasted a shot from 35 yards out into the upper left hand corner of the net to put the Seawolves up, 1-0.

Allenberg put the game out of reach just over 11 minutes later, with 81:29 on the clock, after she received a ball from Barbuto on the left flank. Allenberg curved the ball around the outstretched arms of Siena's keeper Patti Carroll and into the bottom right hand corner of the net, to score her first career goal.

Bennett made a season-high 10 saves to register her first shutout of the season. Patti Carroll saved six shots on the night.

Stony Brook moves to 1-3-1 on the season, while the Saints fall to 2-3.

The Seawolves return to action when they take on Lehigh on Sunday, September 11 at LaValle Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
