Women's Soccer Wins Second Straight In 3-0 Shutout of St. Peter's

Sept. 19, 2003

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team won its second straight game after defeating St. Peter's 3-0 in the second match of the Holiday Inn Express Invitational on Friday evening at LaValle Stadium. In earlier action, Temple shutout Iona 2-0.

The Seawolves remained undefeated at LaValle at 4-0-2 since the stadium opened last year.

The Seawolves (3-2-1) dominated in the first half, outshooting the Peahens (1-5) by a 13-1 margin. Their hard work payed off as Stony Brook got on the board first on an unassisted goal by Joy Gueverra at the 20:50 mark. Gueverra burst up the right side and fired home a shot that was tipped by St. Peter's goalkeeper Andrea Kovalcik and fell into the back of the net.

Just over 20 minutes later, the Seawolves were awarded a penalty kick as Victoria Feliciano was pulled down on a chance up the middle. Feliciano converted her second penalty kick in as many games, putting the ball in the right hand corner of the net, to give Stony Brook a 2-0 edge.

The Seawolves continued their strong play in the second half and put the game away when Kendra Graber blasted in a shot from 10 yards out off a Katelyn Martin throw-in to make it 3-0.

Goalkeeper Cindy Bennett notched her second shutout of the season in the win.

In the first match of the day, Temple used a balanced attack, scoring one goal in each half, to defeat Iona 2-0.

The Owls (2-4) took advantage of a slow start by the Gaels (0-5-1), who had just one shot in the first half. Temple got on the board 7:45 into the contest as Trish Dalton fed Samantha Vietry who blooped the ball over Iona goalkeeper Alicia Wisnewski and into the back of the net from 15 yards out to take a 1-0 lead.

Temple tacked on an insurance goal in the 66th minute as Stephanie Vietry slid a shot between Wisnewski and the left goal post from five yards out, giving the Owls a 2-0 lead. Iona got five shots off in the second half, but was unable to convert.

Temple goalkeeper Jackie Munro made four saves in the shutout victory, while Samantha Vietry added the game-winning goal and an assist. The Owls outshot the Gaels, 14-6, in the contest.

Action in the 2003 Holiday Inn Exress Invitational continues on Sunday when Iona takes on St. Peter's at 11:30 a.m. and Stony Brook battles Temple at 2:30 p.m.
