Women's Soccer Battles Hartford To Scoreless Tie

Oct. 4, 2007

Box Score

West Hartford, CT. - Sophomore Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) posted her fifth straight shutout to extend her scoreless streak to over 561 minutes as the Stony Brook women's soccer team battled Hartford to a 0-0 tie in America East action Thursday night at Al-Marzook Field. The Seawolves go to 4-2-4 overall and 1-0-1 in the America East while Hartford goes to 2-5-3, 0-0-1.

Viola made seven saves on the night but her scoreless streak nearly came to an end in the 33rd minute when Hartford forward Mary Beth Hamilton put a shot over her head that nearly crossed the goal line but senior Krista Shilts (Fairfax, Va.) was there to clear it away and keep the game scoreless.

The Seawolves were out-shot 11-1 in the first half but came out much more aggressive in the second frame, putting all five of its shots on goal. Hartford's senior keeper Elizabeth Cook was up to the task, however, stopping every shot to keep the Hawks in the game.

The Seawolves had their best scoring opportunity in the final overtime frame. Stony Brook dropped a long pass over the Hartford's defensive line that was tracked down by senior Aria Tanzi (Smithtown, N.Y.). Cook had moved out of position in an attempt to get to the ball first, but Tanzi beat her to it and volleyed a shot over her head to the far post. Junior defender Stephanie D'Aurio saved the game for the Hawks by racing to the goal line and clearing the shot away at the last moment.

Cook made five saves on the night for Hartford.

The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, traveling to take on Vermont at 1 p.m.
