Late Barbuto Goal Leads Women's Soccer To 1-0 Victory Over Vermont

Burlington, VT. - Junior Brooke Barbuto's (Syracuse, N.Y.) free kick from 30 yards out in the 78th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Stony Brook women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven with a 1-0 victory over Vermont on Sunday afternoon. In the 78th minute, the Seawolves were awarded a free kick 30 yards out in the middle of the field. Barbuto stepped up and struck the kick to the right post, the ball hit the goal post and deflected into the net to give SBU the 1-0 lead. The Catamounts pressed forward, but could not come up with the equalizer. Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and the Stony Brook defense extended their scoreless to streak to over 651 minutes in posting their sixth straight shutout. The Seawolves nearly took the lead in the 26th minute when senior Aria Tanzi (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit the post and the half ended in a 0-0 tie. The Catamounts best scoring chance came midway through the second half when Jessica Becker's shot from 16 yards out drilled the post. In the 71st minute, Vermont's Sasha Morey received her second yellow card of the game and was sent off, leaving the Catamounts to play the final 18 minutes of regulation with 10 players. Vermont finished the game out shooting Stony Brook 10-9. Vermont's Eliza Bradley made three stops in net, while Viola made four saves for the shutout. Stony Brook improves to 5-2-4 overall and 2-0-1 in America East. The Catamounts fall to 1-10-1 overall and 0-3-0 in America East. The Seawolves return to action on Thursday, hosting New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
