Barbuto, Hemme Lead Women's Soccer Past Vermont, 1-0

Oct. 9, 2008

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Brooke Barbuto (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute and junior Amanda Hemme (East Norwich, N.Y.) posted her first career shutout to lead the Stony Brook women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Vermont Catamounts on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook improves to 6-6-0 overall and 2-1 in the America East with the victory while Vermont falls to 2-11-0 and 0-3.

Barbuto corralled the ball on the Vermont end line just to the left of the net and then dribbled directly at Vermont keeper Eliza Bradley. She fired a shot that Bradley initially stopped before it trickled through her legs and into the net for the only goal of the game. It was the second goal of the season for Barbuto who also scored the game-winner against Fordham. Hemme made five saves in net for the Seawolves who outshot Vermont 20-6.

Vermont nearly tied it with just over five minutes remaining but Hemme saved Jessica Becker's low line drive shot from 20 yards out. Bradley made eight stops in net for the Catamounts who lost their third straight game.

Barbuto almost gave the Seawolves the lead in the opening half as she ripped a shot from 25 yards out that hit off the left post. Sophomore Danielle Tenaglia (North Reading, Mass.) also had a solid scoring chance late in the half but her shot from the top of the box went just high. The teams went into the locker room scoreless despite Stony Brook holding a 9-3 advantage in shots.

The Seawolves continued to generate scoring chances early in the second half as freshman Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) had her shot blast from 20 yards out stopped and redshirt freshman Holly Razzaghi (Bloomsburg, Pa.) saw her header go just wide of the net a few minutes later.

Stony Brook returns to action on Sunday, traveling to take on UMBC. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
