Hartford Downs Women's Soccer, 1-0

Oct. 16, 2005

Box Score

The University of Hartford women's soccer team scored early and held off Stony Brook University on Sunday afternoon for a 1-0 victory at Al-Marzook Field.

Senior Giannetta Savarin scored the game-winning goal in the 17th minute to give the Hawks the advantage. Hartford improved to 4-11-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the America East while Stony Brook dropped to 3-12-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the conference.

Savarino's goal came after she attempted a diving header on a ball that was served in front of the goal from the right side but missed. Freshman Brittany Black then collected the ball on the left side and put it right back in, and Savarino recovered to head the ball past SBU goalkeeper Cindy Bennett.

Senior goalkeeper Cindy Bennett made six saves in the match, while Liz Cook and Stephanie Doyle combined for four saves and the shutout.

Stony Brook returns to action when they host Albany on Thursday, Oct. 20, when they play their final home game of the 2005 season. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
