Women's Soccer Triumph's Over Vermont, 3-2, In Season Finale
Oct. 23, 2005 Sophomore Tiffany Fasullo's shot off a cross from teammate Danielle Lewis hit the left post and bounced into the goal in the 70th minute to lift Stony Brook past Vermont in an America East women's soccer match at Centennial Field on Sunday afternoon. It was the final match of the season for Stony Brook. With the win, the Seawolves close out the year with a record of 5-12-1 overall and 2-6-0 in America East. The Catamounts finish out the regular season with a record of 8-8-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the league. Stony Brook attacked early in the opening minutes of the game. Vermont keeper Laura Kissock denied a on-on-one opportunity by Fasullo two minutes into the game. In the seventh minute, the Seawolves took advantage of a UVM defensive lapse. Jackie Anthony won a tackle in Vermont's defensive end and blasted a shot past Kissock to put Stony Brook up 1-0. Vermont responded with its own goal two minutes later. Melissa Witkiewicz intercepted a clearing attempt by Stony Brook and sent a volley to Nikkie Hessney. She turned on the volley and sent a shot into the upper 90 of the net, knotting the game up 1-1. Stony Brook answered back as halftime approached. Kristin Mishrell headed in a free kick by Chelsea Van Horn in the 40th minute to put the Seawolves back on top, 2-1. The Catamounts rallied again, Koehnline lofted a shot over SBU keeper Cindy Bennett in the 43rd minute to tie the game up at two piece. Despite numerous chances by the Catamounts in the second, it was Fasullo's tally that ended up being the game-winner at the 70th minute. Vermont nearly tied it up in the final minutes of the game. Witkiewicz fired a free kick from 20 yards out in the 83rd minute, but it banged off the cross bar and out of bounds.
Vermont out shot Stony Brook 22-8 and held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks in the game. Bennett finished the day with four stops for the Seawolves, while Kissock was credited with two saves for the Catamounts. |
