Archuleta's First Half Goal Leads Women's Soccer Over Vermont 1-0

Oct. 24, 2003

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Melanie Archuleta scored midway through the first half to lead Stony Brook to a 1-0 victory over visiting Vermont in America East women's soccer action on Friday afternoon in Stony Brook, N.Y. The win snapped the Seawolves' five match losing streak and improved them to 6-9-1 overall and 2-4-0 in league play, while the Catamounts fell to 5-7-3 and 1-4-1.

Stony Brook broke through at the 32:36 mark when Danielle Lewis picked up the ball in a scramble to the right of the Vermont goal. She passed it back to Archuleta who fired it home from about eight yards out into the back of the net to give the Seawolves the 1-0 lead. It was all the offense Stony Brook would need as it held on for the victory.

The Seawolves had several great chances early in the game but were unable to convert. About nine minutes into the first half, Lewis took the ball up the middle and shed two defenders, but fired the ball just right of the goal. At the 23 minute mark, Lewis again ran by her defender to gain control of the ball and crossed it back to Jackie Anthony, but she ran past the ball. Kendra Graber was there to pick it up, but her shot hit the cross bar.

The Seawolves put on the pressure late in the second, with their best chance coming with about 7:45 to go. The ball was loose in front of the Vermont net after a corner kick and Lewis headed it, but hit the right post.

Cindy Bennett stopped five shots to earn her fifth shutout of the season and 11th of her career. Katie Duffy turned away three shots in the loss for the Catamounts.

The Seawolves return to action on Sunday when they host Boston University at 1:00 p.m.
