Late Penalty Kick Lifts Maine To 1-0 Victory Over Women's Soccer

Oct. 28, 2007

Box Score

Orono, Maine - Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) made four saves but a Maine penalty kick in the 76th minute proved to be the difference as the Black Bears edged the Stony Brook women's soccer team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in both teams regular-season finale. The Seawolves fall to 7-4-5 overall and 4-2-2 in the conference while Maine improves to 6-7-3 and 4-3-1.

The two teams played through a scoreless first half with Maine holding a 5-2 edge in shots.

The Black Bears broke the deadlock though at the 75:59 mark when Laura Harper was fouled in the penalty area. Maine was awarded a penalty kick and Harper beat Viola with a shot to the lower right corner.

Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips stopped four shots to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

Maine finished with an 11-7 edge in shots.

The two teams will face each other in an America East quarterfinal match on Thursday evening. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
