Softball Loses to Mount St. Mary's; Has Night Game Cancelled

March 9, 2008

Box Score

Stony Brook's softball team lost to Mount St. Mary's Sunday at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md., 8-5, dropping the Seawolves to 5-6 on the season. Stony Brook's scheduled game against Fordham was cancelled due to inclement weather. The teams plan to make the game up at a later date.

Stony Brook grabbed an early 2-1 lead on Mount St. Mary's courtesy of a single by junior Molly Kestranek (St. Mary's, Ga.) which plated junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) and sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hills, N.J.); both of whom had reached base on errors.

After The Mount regained the lead in the top of the second by pushing across two runs, senior Sara Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.) evened the game up with a one-out home run to right center.

However, a five-run fourth by Mount St. Mary's proved to be too much for the Seawolves to overcome. An RBI single to leftfield by junior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) and a sacrifice fly RBI by sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) in the fifth were the only other runs for Stony Brook on the day.

The Seawolves will be in Hempstead, N.Y. next weekend competing against Hofstra and Saint Joseph's in the Hofstra Invitational.
