Softball Splits Day One of Stony Brook Invitational
March 21, 2008
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Back-to-back home runs to left field by juniors Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) and Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) broke the game open for Stony Brook in the top of the 11th inning against Dartmouth, as the Seawolves prevailed, 5-2 Friday at University Field. Stony Brook was held scoreless for the first six innings of game against Quinnipiac, which they eventually lost, 6-4. Stony Brook currently stands at 9-7-1 on the season. After seven innings of scoreless softball, the Seawolves notched their first run of the game in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Dartmouth answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a wild pitch, to even the score at 1-1. After both teams were held scoreless in the ninth, the teams flip-flopped scoring plays, with junior Molly Kestranek (St. Mary's, Ga.) scoring in the top of the tenth on a passed ball and the Big Green scoring in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly. Another sacrifice fly by Kavitsky in the 11th put the Seawolves back up by one, and then Fanelli and Fleury hit back-to-back solo homers to extend the lead to three. The home run was Fanelli's third on the season and Fleury's first. With runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the 11th, Dartmouth's Nikki Yee lined a ball back up the middle which was deflected by freshman pitcher Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) and caught by a diving Kavitsky for the final out. Matthes pitched all 11 innings for the Seawolves, allowing just two hits and recording six strikeouts, while improving to 2-3 on the year.
In the earlier game against Quinnipiac, Stony Brook was facing a 6-0 deficit in the seventh when they pushed across four runs with RBI singles from Kavitsky, Fanelli and Kestranek and a sacrifice fly by Fleury. Senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) led the Seawolves offensively in game one with two hits each. Alyssa Struzenberg lost her first game of the season, moving to 6-1 overall. Stony Brook will face Dartmouth on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and then play Quinnipiac at 2:30 p.m. |
