Softball Notches 2-4 Record At Colgate Invitational
April 2, 2000 Hamilton, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team went 2-4 at the Colgate Invitational last weekend, winning both games in extra innings, to improve its overall record to 3-17. The Seawolves had a slow start in their first game of the tournament against Dartmouth on Saturday. The Big Green erupted for nine runs in the first inning and the Seawolves never caught up. Dartmouth capitalized on six USB errors in the 11-3 win. Stony Brook rebounded in its next game, defeating Buffalo 3-2 in extra innings. The score was tied 2-2 heading into the eighth, and USB held the Bulls scoreless. Cassidee Broadwater drove in the winning run, with her RBI single scoring Alyson Lamonte for the 3-2 final score. Victoria Menchise went 4-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Cassie Rupp picked up the win on the mound. Manhattan defeated Stony Brook 5-1 in the last game of the day. A four-run third inning for the Jaspers gave them a lead that USB would never overcome. Manhattan's lead grew to 5-0 before Broadwater drove home Lisa Notaro for USB's only score. On Sunday, the Seawolves first faced St. Bonaventure. USB had an early 1-0 lead but the Bonnies scored two runs off four hits in the fifth for a 2-1 edge. St. Bonaventure added three runs in the seventh to increase its lead to 5-1. The Seawolves mustered two runs in the seventh, but the final score of 5-3 would be as close as Stony Brook would get. Corrine Vish led the Seawolves, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Colgate defeated USB 6-2 in the next game, striking for 12 hits while giving up only four. The Seawolves finished the weekend on a winning note as they beat Colgate 6-5 in extra innings. USB opened the game on a tear, scoring four runs in the first inning. Broadwater's RBI double scored Vish, and Tricia Lipareli drove home Rupp and Broadwater. Menchise's single scored Lipareli for the early 4-0 lead. But the Lions chipped away at the lead, scoring two runs in the third. Rupp added a run in the fourth for a score of 5-2. But with a 5-3 score, Columbia opened the seventh inning with two runs to tie the game at 5-5. Stony Brook was unable to counter in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to a decisive eighth inning. The Lions went down in order at the top of the eighth, and Vish drove home the winning run for the 6-5 victory. Vish was 4-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Cassidee Broadwater went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Tricia Lipareli scored one run and picked up two RBI, going 1-for-4 at the plate. Pitcher Stephanie Poetzsch picked up the save, relieving Lisa Notaro in the seventh inning. She struck out two in six at-bats and improved her record to 2-9. Stony Brook returns home for a doubleheader against Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at University Field. |
