Seawolves Facilities
Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium The 1990's have been an era of change for athletic facilities at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The era was kicked off with the opening of Stony Brook's SB Sports Complex and will also see the opening of a new outdoor athletic stadium in the next few years. Funding for the stadium was approved two years ago and construction began on the facility this spring. Stony Brook's athletic facilities are improving at the pace of its athletic program, which enters its second year at the Division I level. Indoor physical education and athletic facilities include the SB Sports Complex which contains a new west wing that opened in 1990, and the existing Pritchard Gymnasium. The main arena of the complex seats 5,226 for basketball or volleyball and 6,000 for special events such as lectures, concerts and commencement ceremonies. The SB Sports Complex is the second largest indoor facility in Suffolk County and third largest on Long Island (Nassau Coliseum being the largest). In addition to hosting Seawolves athletic events, the facility has served host to the Professional Bowlers Tour, Ross Perot's Presidential Campaign Tour in 1992, Suffolk County High School Championships, and countless concerts and local events. Also located in the west wing of the complex is the Herman Nertz Track, a four-lane, five-sprint-lane track (177 meters in distance). The facility houses six glass-back-walled squash courts, new locker room facilities, including six new team rooms, and a state-of-the-art Athletic Training Room that includes hydrotherapy, electrotherapy and a comprehensive, well-equipped rehabilitation area. The building also contains two attractive lobby areas suitable for receptions and large gatherings, and two fully-equipped concession stands. The west wing is connected to the existing Pritchard Gymnasium, which features a main gymnasium that seats 1,700 for women's volleyball. When not in use for competition, the gymnasium contains three multipurpose courts suitable for basketball, volleyball, badminton or indoor soccer. The east wing also houses a six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool, eight racquetball courts, a varsity free weight room, a Universal weight room, a dance studio and an exercise room. The Outdoor athletic facilities extend over 25 acres and feature the 2,000-seat Seawolves Field, which houses the football and lacrosse teams. The soccer complex contains two tree-lined, fenced-in fields and is used exclusively by the varsity soccer teams. Construction has begun on a new softball complex that will play home to the Seawolves in the spring of 2001. The baseball field has been recently renovated and contains modern dugouts and a 28-foot scoreboard. The baseball field will see further improvements in coming years. In addition to the new scoreboards erected at baseball in 1995, Seawolves Field and the soccer complex also received scoreboards. Construction began in May of 2000 on a 7,500-seat outdoor stadium to house football, lacrosse, and soccer. This spring also saw the completion of two new office suites. One suite will house the up-and-coming men's and women's basketball programs while the other will be manned by the athletic advancement staff. The 10-room basketball suite includes office space, meeting rooms and state-of-the-art technology to help take the teams into the new Division I era. Additional outdoor facilities include 12 brand new tennis courts and four single-wall handball/paddleball courts. Most athletics facilities may be used for recreational purposes when they are not scheduled for classes, intercollegiate, intramural or special events. Membership is required for use of the Sports Complex by all non-Stony Brook ID holders. Information pertaining to all physical education and athletic offerings, and facility usage, may be obtained in the complex main office or by calling 631-632-9271. |
